Ammonium plays a key role in the nitrogen cycle. The natural breakdown of animal and plant matter produces ammonium which is converted by bacteria to nitrite and then nitrate, an important nutrient for plants. Large increases in pH disrupt this cycle, producing ammonia which is extremely harmful to aquatic life.
