Bromine is used as an alternative to chlorine disinfection. In a similar way to chlorine, it is not actually bromine that is present in the swimming pool, but hydrobromous acid which can be released by certain chemical compounds. Bromine has several advantages over chlorine, most notably as being less harsh to human eyes and skin. However, in terms of disinfecting power bromine is less powerful than chlorine.
