Total or combined chlorine refers to the amount of free chlorine used up. It is important to note that this chlorine remains in the solution but in an inactive form. High levels of combined chlorine usually are accompanied by a strong odour. Total chlorine levels should always be maintained as low as possible, ideally no more than 1ppm.
