J-QUANT Ammonia 6 test strips semi-quantitatively measure the ammonia content of aqueous solutions up to 6 mg/L (ppm). Ammonia is extremely toxic and damaging to aquatic life.
Ammonia levels in water increase with pH’s > 7, via conversion from ammonium. Ammonia is excreted by fish through the gills whereas ammonium can be present in water through the biological breakdown of plant matter. Even levels of 0.05 mg/L ammonia can be harmful to fish, whilst levels of 1 mg/L and above pose extremely serious health risks including death. It is recommended that ammonia levels in an aquarium should be monitored weekly.
