J-QUANT Carbonate Hardness test strips semi-quantitatively measure the carbonate hardness content of aqueous solutions up to 240 mg/L or 30oD. The measurement of carbonate hardness is important for water quality in ponds, aquariums, swimming pools and drinking water.
Sometimes referred to as “temporary hardness” or “total alkalinity”, carbonate hardness can be attributed to the combination of carbonate (CO32-) and bicarbonate (HCO3-) ions. Particularly in swimming pools and aquariums, these ions are utilised to resist large swings in pH, which could have detrimental effects on both environments.
Carbonate hardness is usually expressed in degrees (dKH) or mg/L as CaCO3 (1 dKH is equal to 17.848 mg/L of CaCO3).
