Phenolphthalein paper gives a qualitative indication of pH between 8.4 and 9.6. Below pH 8,4, the paper is colourless, whereas above pH 9.6 a bright pink/magenta will be observed. This is particularly useful in the cleaning of beer lines to ensure all detergent residues have been thoroughly rinsed.
